Everybody wants clean air乾净空气, but the increasing public and political clamor噪声 to cut greenhouse gases and raise fuel efficiency燃料效能 is giving the worlds automakers an ulcer弊病.

Executives in Detroit底特律, Toyoda City, Stuttgart海德堡, and Turin are passing the Prilosec because times are already tough enough for the auto industry. Stricter standards 严格的标准for CO2 emissions二氧化碳散发 in Europe and a new 35-mpg Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard in the U.S. mean they have to sort out挑出 which alternative fuels替代 hold the best solutions, in terms of cost, technology, regulations, and customer acceptance. And they have to pay for it out of their increasingly dwindling profits.

Valerie Casey was on a cross-country flight—her third that month—when she had a crisis of conscience道义心. The designer, who then worked at frog and is now at IDEO, had just pitched a packaging project to one of the worlds largest delivery services, a company with a so-so environmental record. The film An Inconvenient Truth was still echoing through her mind心灵, and yet she felt unsure of how to even begin a conversation about sustainability with her clients. In her frustration挫折, she wrote what she called a "Kyoto Treaty"京都协定 of design.

去年12月6日，非营利组织「避免森林破坏」主持在峇里岛举行的联合国气候变化研讨会。

这个组织的55岁创办人霍诺维兹对着挤满会议室的环保人士，发表他对雨林保护的看法。他形容自己迈入职涯的一个里程碑，之前，他并不是环保人士，一年前还是旧金山一个高收入、炙手可热的建筑师。

愈来愈多的中年跑道转换者，投入更符合自己爱护地球心意的工作，所谓的「绿色工作」慢慢崛起。目前美国可再生能源、省能产业共创造850万工作机会，预估到2030年会增为4,000万个。

能源产业，850万工作机会…

这些新兴产业吸引来营建、金融、行销领域的高手，前来一展身手。由於人才需求迫切，这些转跑道的绿领阶级通常薪水都会加码，但对这群地球扞卫武士来说，能够让世界更美好，或许给他们带来更大的满足感。

许多有职业倦怠症的上班族，有心对地球尽一份心力，却不知如何找到绿领工作，带动相关顾问业务的崛起。任职职业介绍公司的柯潘，已对自己的顾问工作感到厌烦，她看到绿色转换跑道者的趋势，在2000年将自己定位为环保事业顾问。

她所创的绿色事业公司，已经协助几千位顾客，评估自己的技能和兴趣，最适合哪类环保相关的工作，并且协助他们找到雇主。

例如，奇异公司的一位离职人力资源经理人，拥有各式各样的技能，柯潘必须为他思考如何在绿色工作运用这些技能。答案很简单，她为这位高阶经理人在一家有机食品公司找到人资经理的职位。

中年转业，工作热情更高…

或许有人希望能在完全不同的功能领域，发展事业第二春，柯潘表示，他们还是大有机会，「因为这是一个全新的领域，变革的空间更大。」

霍诺维兹就是一个例子。身为知名建筑师事务所的合夥人，他似乎一切不缺，但是介入他协助创立的营利环保组织，让他发现自己对环保工作的满腔热情，他体认到，碳权交易会让雨林保护变成一门可以赚钱的生意。

他去年离开建筑师事务所，成立智库「避免森林破坏」，期望透过国际间的政策，达到这个目标。虽然他每天的例行公事有了很大的改变，不过之前练就的技能都还能派上用场。

霍诺维兹表示，现在的薪水不能和建筑师时代相提并论，他在联合国气候改变研讨会上，形容自己的这段经验，「就像参加2万人的摇滚音乐会，而我们就在後台和主唱在一起。」看来，他好像年终奖金领得比较多。（取材自美国商业周刊) 【2008/02/05 经济日报】
